this one shows van gogh’s more cosmic beliefs. most people don’t notice the tiny village and church about to be destroyed by the giant waves. humankind may come to be and pass away but nature lives on.
Madonna with the Long Neck, Parmigianino (1535-40)
Also known as Madonna and Child with Angles and St. Jerome, this famous oil painting by the Italian artist Parmigianino was composed during the Mannerist art-historical period, but never actually finished as he died before its completion. In this painting, we can see a calm and young Virgin Mary with a baby Jesus on her lap and several angels behind her. The two here are given elongated figures, a trademark of the Mannerist style, which makes them, Virgin Mary in particular, appear slender and graceful. At once, Parmigianino breaks convention and the formulaic proportions of the Renaissance era while maintaining an effulgent and elegant beauty.
