Irises by Vincent van Gogh ca. 1889

Van Gogh painted Irises the year before his death, in 1889, during his stay at the asylum in Saint Remy de Provence. Van Gogh often used painting as a way to keep himself from going insane, and this painting was one such work. It was painted before his first mental attack at the asylum. Van Gogh sent the painting to his brother Theo, who immediately sent it to the Salon des Independants that same year, where it was exhibited and highly praised.

Madonna with the Long Neck, Parmigianino (1535-40)

Also known as Madonna and Child with Angles and St. Jerome, this famous oil painting by the Italian artist Parmigianino was composed during the Mannerist art-historical period, but never actually finished as he died before its completion. In this painting, we can see a calm and young Virgin Mary with a baby Jesus on her lap and several angels behind her. The two here are given elongated figures, a trademark of the Mannerist style, which makes them, Virgin Mary in particular, appear slender and graceful. At once, Parmigianino breaks convention and the formulaic proportions of the Renaissance era while maintaining an effulgent and elegant beauty.

Edgar Degas, 1834-1917. French Impressionism.

A New Orleans-born aristocrat, this painter preferred the bourgeois, erotic environment of the ballet to the sunny meadows of southern France like some of his contemporaries. Fascinated by the human body in motion, he rapidly filled up entire sketchbooks with delicately rendered hands, skirts, interiors, and mirrors. Like other Impressionists, he was fascinated by the Japanese Edo concept of the “floating world”, or tilted perspective, and incorporated elements of the ukiyo-e prints into his work. A bit distant from the other Impressionists (Impressionist is, after all, a very loose title and refers more to the time period in which the artists exhibited and not necessarily their individual styles) he nonetheless helped organize exhibitions in the 1870’s and 80’s.

“This preciously decorated and extremely rare coral cutlery set from the late 1500s would have been only used on extraordinary occasions, such as a wedding, a knighting or a state visit. In the late Renaissance, the guests would typically bring their own cutlery to formal dinners. An expensively decorated cutlery set would have elicited the host’s and other guests’ admiration. Besides, coral was believed to be an antidote against poison. Therefore, in the view of its time this set of cutlery would have offered its bearer special protection during a meal at the table of a rival family or of an untrustworthy foreign ruler.” - from the MIA description
